One of the best museums in Berlin and definitely the only one I know of to give you insight into the daily lives of former East Berliners is the DDR museum. This gem is tucked away on Museum Island among a vast array of establishments museums. The museum operators have faithfully created all aspects of East Berliners lives during the ‘Wall” years. See a replica of an apartment, take a look at grocery stores, automobiles (the engineering marvel that is the Trabant), vacation hideaways, fashion, schools and education, and see how the Stasi kept a watchful eye on its people.
Some of my favorites are the replica of a Trabant and a propaganda film self-promoting it’s ability to build dreary gray apartment blocks in under 3 months.

This sounds like an interesting museum to visit.
Yes, I was amazed by how tightly controlled the people were from where they vacationed to what music they listened to. It’s a definite must see while in Berlin.
