Here is a collection of funny roadsigns I found while traveling in Belize. While I admit, not all of them are funny but deal with serious issues in this region, they are very striking in that I have never seen the amount of signs dealing with earnest social issues as I have in Belize.
Belize is as culturally diverse as they come and walking around any bus station ones sees the this. Mestizos (Spanish/Mayan heritage) comprise about 34% of the population, Kriols (slave descendants) 25%, Spanish 15%, Maya 11%, and Garinagu (Carib & African heritage) 6%. Signs about inequality are everywhere.
Kriol is considered one of Belize’s national languages although to the trained hear, it sounds like lazy caribbean accented English.
I was told Belize has less than a handful of traffic lights in the entire country and it seems even fewer traffic police. To combat on reckless speeding, the country has installed traffic bumps all over the place as a way to ensure safe driving habits. Below are a couple examples.
Human Traffickingis a serious problem in Belize and warning billboards all over the country.
