Thailand is for the most part a Buddhist country save for some pockets in the South where Islam calls the shots. But the Thai’s devotion to Buddha goes above and beyond any Christian worship to J.C. This is evidence in the sheer size of Buddha statues found throughout the country. Specifically, the large Buddha in Phuket comes to mind. He sits on a large hill overlooking the island and is pretty much visible from most places.
Getting Here: Lucky for you, cheap airline tickets are abound out of Bangkok for under $100. The big guy sits on the highest peak and signs and locals know how to direct you. You can take a taxi or motorbike. I choose the latter of the two and wasn’t disappointed. There are some spectacular views once you hit the top with a couple rest ways for grabbing a drink and enjoying the scenery.
Tips: Seeing the Buddha is free (donations accepted) but please show your respect to the Buddhist culture and cover your shoulders and knees, no bathing suits.
Please check out my Big Buddha pics, do not adjust your mirrors because the objects are actually this big.
