Money makes the world go round, just like it lets you go round. You have heard the stories about the vagabond travelers who left with mere hundreds in the bank account, I don’t and can’t subscribe to this type of traveling. I am one of the majority when it comes to having a nice chunk of cash to cushion the traveling. Here is a breakdown of the budget I am proposing for 12-18 months of traveling along with an itinerary, because not all RTW travel is created equal.
Total Budget (Departure Date is May 2010):
- $15,000 (living, eating, land travel, cultural, housing, internet, etc)
- $4,000 (oversea and long distance airfare- I am opting for an a la carte airfare option, not RTW ticket)
- South America Budget 6-months $5,000 *this includes $1000 for overages
- Airfare (eastern US- Ecuador) $0 (using FF miles)
- Ecuador (2 months) $1,000 Spanish classes + light traveling (free housing from a friend )
- Peru/Bolivia/Chile (2 months) $1,800
- Argentina (1 month) $1,200 (rent apartment in Buenos Aires for 3 ppl $300 month rent)
**Budget may be offset through English language tutoring in Ecuador and Buenos Aires and some volunteering.
- Eastern Europe/Russia/China Budget 4-months $4000
- Trans-Siberian railroad Moscow-Beijing $500
- 1-month visiting friends in Southern Russia and English tutoring $300
- Japan Budget 1-month $1100 (based on $40 a day- this will include train travel)
- India Budget 3-months $2100 (based on $20 dollars a day, which is considered to be very high by some for India)
- SE Asia 4-months $2800 (based on $23 dollars a day, which is very high for certain parts of these countries)
Again, this is a preliminary budget and my trip could come in higher, (less travel time than planned) or could come in lower (more months added to the agenda). Along the way, there will be several oppty’s for volunteering and English tutoring which will help with expenses and the oppty to earn internet income from blogs and travel writing. I am also looking at couch surfers for Japan to substantially decrease living expenses over there. But taking all of this out, $15,000 is a decent amount to embark upon a trip of this magnitude.
Hope this helps you as you budget for your trip.
